First Solid Food: Avocado

At exactly four months and two weeks, Vincent ate his first solid food.  Elizabeth started solids around the same time too.  When we started solids with her, we did all the grains first: rice, oatmeal, and then barely.  Afterwards she ate veggies, fruits and beyond six months, meats.  The pediatric recommendations have since changed.  Babies can start with any food item and you no longer have to follow a strict food order, though meats should still be later in the process.  By six months of age, babies can eat all different foods and mild spices, as long as they're mashed and made for baby consumption.  Thus, for Vincent's first food, we chose avocado.  It's loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, good fats, and no sugar.  Unlike grains, which turns into a sugar.

We wanted to wait until Vincent was five months to give him his first food, but he's been showing signs of eagerness so we let him have a taste of avocado today.  Every time we eat, he follows the food from the table into our mouths and I've seen him smack his lips a few times watching us eat.  We were pleasantly surprised at his ability to gum the avocado and even swallow it.  Wow, is there a good eater in our future? -S

  1. Goooo Vinnie!! Nice suggestion on the avocado. I guess we'll need to enter the food world soon. (Oh, and we have the same bib. :P )
